Ever since Viagra became available on the internet, buying Viagra online without prescription has become a common practice. This practice has, however, been consistently advised against. However, a lot of people still see the internet as a most viable option for buying Viagra cheap deals. Apart from the obvious threat of buying fake copies of the drug, another threat of almost equal proportion could be the rare side effects produced by the drug, if reports of certain people who took the drug are to be believed.
In October 2007, the label of Viagra was modified to include warnings about sudden loss of hearing associated with the drug. This came after the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) had requested the changes due to the report it received about 29 patients who experienced sudden loss of hearing just within hours to two days of taking real Viagra tablets.
Because of the predominance of the older population who take Viagra, loss of hearing among this patient population would not be an uncommon occurrence. However, the process is almost always gradual, and sudden loss of hearing is classified a rarity. The sudden loss of hearing associated with Viagra was often accompanied by ringing in the ears – known as or tinnitus – and dizziness, according to the FDA. In a third of the cases reported, the hearing loss was temporary, with every case involving the loss of hearing in one ear.
It is on record that some cases of hearing loss were reported during Viagra’s pre-approval testing. As a result of this, a one-word caution of “deafness” as a possible side effect on the old Viagra label was mentioned. The new warning on sudden hearing loss is included, in contrast, in both the “Adverse Reactions” and “Precautions” sections of the new label. The new label now warns of “sudden decrease or loss of hearing” in the “Adverse Reactions” section. The label also advises physicians to warn patients that sudden hearing loss is a possible side effect of Viagra, in the “Precautions” section. It also advises patients to stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention should in case they experience a decrease or sudden loss in hearing, or dizziness.
Nonarteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION): another Viagra side effect?
Another reported case of Viagra side effect is the nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), an eye defect that can result in permanent loss of vision. US researchers, in a recent study, described seven patients who developed NAION after taking sildenafil citrate for their erectile difficulties. When combined with past reports, this study brought the total number of Viagra-related NAION cases to 14 since the approval of the drug in 1998.
Co-author of the study Dr. Howard D. Pomeranz, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, said in a statement that it had been known for years that a number of men who take Viagra would experience short-term color changes in their vision and see things as blue or green. All the patients developed symptoms of NAION within 24 hours of using Viagra, with the exception of one patient whose symptoms began about 24 to 36 hours after taking the drug.
Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drug maker and the maker of Viagra, affirmed that U.S FDA may require them to include a warning in the label that Viagra has been linked to reports of vision loss and blindness in at least one in a million users of the drug. Discussions are ongoing between Pfizer and the FDA about adding the warning of the rare side effects of vision impairment by Viagra users.

Lewis Goodfellow was born prematurely at 24 weeks. Sildenafil corrects this problem, in Lewis’s case at least, by opening up the blood vessels to allow for the capture of oxygen and its subsequent spread to the other parts of the body.
Another factual story of how Viagra helped to save an infant’s life is the case of a baby from Kolkata, India, who was born with a rare congenital heart problem. According to cardiac surgeon, K.R. Balakrishnan of Malar Hospital – where the baby was born – the baby’s heart had a hole in it and was on the wrong side of her body.
She also had a poorly formed right lung that needed to be repaired. Born to Subrata and Dipa Saha of Kolkata in December, the baby was called Tanisha. During the risky, four-hour operation that saw her blood pressure rising and her blood begin flowing in the wrong direction to the heart, Balakrishnan confirmed that he gave Tanisha Viagra, and the drug is being given credit for saving her life.
Finally, for a drug which has achieved so much popularity for bringing succour to many a home of impotent man, the testified dimension of Viagra’s ability to solve such critical heart problems as in the infants’ stories would in no doubt renew the already heightened interest in the drug. From an ethical standpoint, however, anyone who wishes to buy Viagra cheap deals, for whatever reason, should seek the advice of a professional.

Halai Ashish and his pharmacy wife, Nanya Halai, ran a legitimate pharmacy for a number of years. As a result of the goodwill they’d apparently built in the course of running the business, Halai and Nanya used their business name to sell herbal weight-loss aids after selling their business. But not content with what they were earning from the weight loss aids, the British couple soon got themselves involved in fake Viagra dealings, selling the Erectile Dysfunction treatment to unsuspecting people who wanted to buy Viagra online safely.
After getting a deal to supply a Mexican company based in the Bahamas, Halai developed a vast network of contacts which helped him smuggle the fake Viagra into Great Britain en route to the Bahamas. Perfecting the art of concealment by marking the packages as vitamin supplements for dogs, Halai had the drugs shipped using reputable companies such as DHL.
A case spanning the course of 2003 and 2004, the counterfeit drugs were detected and seized while being smuggled into the Stansted and Heathrow airports. Tests on samples collected showed the drugs contained up to 90 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients found in real drugs, with most of the counterfeit drugs being on offer on the internet. Further investigations showed that Halai and his group were part of a UK distribution arm of a global counterfeiting ring that operated from India, Pakistan and China, and having tentacles extending into the Caribbean and the US.
The Halai drug case is a factual and classic story of the boom in the fake Viagra trade, with the internet providing the leeway for the fake dealers to perpetrate their crimes. These fake dealers – provided ample incentives by the multi-million dollars market in real Viagra tablets – exploit the desperation of people who want to be discreet and want to buy Viagra cheap on line.
The fact that the Halai gang went as far as prescribing drugs to their clients showed that it is also possible that people, who want to go through the normal route of prescription but don’t take the time to look out for reputable pharmaceutical companies online, can fall prey to these scammers. Other notable fake drug raids have been reported.
In the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Chinese police raided a 30-man gang on the suspicion of selling or making fake Viagra. 18,000 fake Viagra tablets were found among over a ton of fake drugs which were to be sold to over 12 countries by the gang. In Guangdong, 12 people were arrested, with a ton of fake drugs and large volumes of raw materials for producing the citrate salt of sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra.
Continuing the litany of fake drugs dealership is the December 18th interception of a freight cargo bound for Brazil at the Paris main air hub at Roissy. Branded Erectalis and Powergra, the contents of each box were found to be four tablets cloned in the characteristic colour and shape of Viagra and Cialis pills.
On inspection by representatives of Pfizer and Eli Lilly, the respective makers of Viagra and Cialis, the drugs were confirmed to be fake.
In responding to the menace of the boom in the internet sales of fake Viagra pills, Mike Deats, Head of Enforcement at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, was forthright when he said that self-prescription of medicines through the internet was not only swelling the accounts of those criminals who have completely by-passed the legitimate supply chain in selling the drugs, but was risky to the health of the consumers and could have the potential to kill.
