Sildenafil citrate, popularly known as Viagra, is the popular erectile dysfunction treatment exclusively distributed and marketed by the leading pharmaceutical company in the world, Pfizer. Originally formulated as a treatment for hypertension and angina pectoris by a group of pharmaceutical chemists,  Viagra tablets were found not to be effective for the treatment of angina. However, they produced an unexpected side effect: They caused erection in men who took them. After further studies and tests, the drug became approved in 1998 as the first oral erectile dysfunction by the US Food and Drug Administration.
